Casa Protegida Julia de Burgos, Inc. (Casa Julia) is the first shelter for female survivors of Victims of Domestic Violence that was established in Puerto Rico in 1979. Since its founding, Casa Julia has carried out important work protecting and assisting victims of domestic violence victims. It has been given the task of preparing escape, security and contingency plans, the creation of safe spaces for the location of mothers and their children who are being stalked by the aggressor, at imminent risk of suffering physical and psychological damage and worse still, wandering. Through shelter, orientation and counseling services, participants are directed towards an empowerment process through which they recognize their potential to take control of their lives and live a life free of violence.

Why Julia de Burgos?

Julia de Burgos was a pioneer in the feminist movement of the 1940s and 1950s. First modern woman. She lived and died passionately. The work of Julia de Burgos is characterized by its unique strength, which arises from her passionate romanticism that leads her to develop nature and love in a mystical and metaphysical way.

Vision and mission

The Institution maintains the vision of providing shelter, protection and support to women survivors of domestic violence, as well as their daughters and sons. Autonomy and self-sufficiency of its participants is promoted.

Casa Julia's mission is to be a leading organization in achieving the well-being of women survivors of domestic violence and their children, through cutting-edge initiatives and integrated services that promote equity, solidarity and coexistence in an environment of peace.
